HISTORY
30.6.-2.7.2023
Metal music is on the rise, and along with it comes also Tuska’s second consecutive visitor record year. As many as 63,000 moshers gathered in Helsinki’s Suvilahti during the three festival days, each day tallying up 21,000 metalheads. Tuska 2023 was sold out in advance.
The most popular acts of Tuska weekend included each of the headliners; French and charming Gojira, the iconic VV and one of the hottest rock bands of the moment, Ghost. Huge audiences in front of the Radio Rock Main Stage were also gathered by the Gothenburg legend In Flames, the deathcore engine Lorna Shore who will be returning to Finland in the fall, Ukrainian Jinjer, the long-awaited American metalcore group Motionless In White, the Mongolian throat-singing crew The Hu and the sureshot locals Lost Society.
As expected, the hugely popular Electric Callboy packed the biggest audience of the weekend to the Tent Stage.
The capacity and services of the Inferno Stage had been improved since last year, and Vended, Finntroll and Butcher Babies took advantage of that, each attracting a huge crowd.
In addition to the curated program, the Tuska KVLT stage featured seven bands who had redeemed their Tuska show by working at last summer’s festival in the Tuska KVLT. The KVLT bands that worked at this summer’s festival will be seen on the Tuska KVLT stage next summer.

Tuska Expo offered the wonderful Pakanalliset Syysmessut Goes Tuska exibition, where you could participate in various workshops, try burning at the stake, Impossible Bodyart’s suspension sessions or even buy a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth.
Once again, the local shopping center Redi, who by now are already long-time partners, provided shelter and services galore for the Tuska audience.
Thank you everyone involved for another great year. As for 2024 – it’s going to be even better!
1.-3.7.2022
At last. A collective sigh of relief was experienced at Suvilahti, when Tuska gates were opened after two mandatory sabbatical years. After such a break, the presence of the metal community felt amazing and much needed.
Twentythird annual Tuska festival gathered 49 000 metal enthusiasts to Suvilahti and this is the biggest number of visitors in the festival’s history. Sold out Saturday hit the peak of 17 500 metalheads with Friday and Sunday trailing with 16 500 and 15 000, respectively.
Tuska 2022 program cashed in on all expectations, no matter how preposterous they might have been. On the headliner front, Nu-metal monsters Korn and Deftones proved their timelessness once again and all time heavy metal greatness of Mercyful Fate sealed the deal. Other crowd pleasers were ever amazing local boys Amorphis, Finnish metal fan favorite Devin Townsend, briliant and mega-talented Stam1na and Ukrainian power house Jinjer. Tuska Forum by HS speaker program was constructed carefully on metal music culture’s basic principles, emphasizing the themes of freedom of speech, truth and equality. The speaker guests featured an ambitious line-up of metal music’s international and Finnish stars and several acclaimed specialists and non-fiction writers: social psychology professor Atte Oksanen from the University of Tampere, Attila Csihar from metal legend Mayhem, freelance journalist and non-fiction writer Markus Tiittula, Tomi Joutsen of Finnish band Amorphis and the pioneer of performance arts Pekka Kainulainen, singer-songwriter A.W. Yrjänä of Finnish band CMX, Chairman of the Helsinki Pride community Panu Mäenpää, Tuska designer Jenni Kääriäinen, Lähiöbotox vocalist Viki aka Seksikäs Suklaa, award-winning journalist Johanna Vehkoo and the Iranian band Confess who live in exile because of their music.
The new and improved festival area and services received excellent reviews from the festival audience. Also, the nearby shopping center REDI once again played a huge role, as wristband exchange and all gate services took place in their premises. Cooperation between REDI and Tuska crowd was as seamless as it can get, thank you for that, all parties involved.
The return of Tuska went as everyone had hoped. Plans for 2023 are very much underway at the time of writing this and public information may be available sooner than you think!
2.-4.7.2021

More than 500 little moshers turned up with their parents to pass the metal torch on to the next generation.
29.6.-1.7.2018
The 21st annual Tuska was once again exceptionally exquisite. 34 000 metalheads wandered to Suvilahti, which, after years of Kaisaniemi-nostalgy and speculation, has become the trusted Tuska-location. The weekend’s most anticipated act was perhaps Body Count featuring none other than Ice T himself. And Body Count’s first ever Finnish show did not let anyone down, that’s for damn sure.
Other days were headlined by the classy French giant known as Gojira and Australian metalcore greats Parkway Drive.

30.6.-2.7.2017
Tuska 20th Anniversary was a big deal. We had an anthem, records were broken left and right, including Tuska’s all time visitor record, which now stands at 37 000 over 3 festival days, and we all experienced all kinds of wonderful things.
And the program. How good was that? The crown jewel being the almighty HIM, who are wrapping up their incredible career. Other headliners were Sweden’s tank division Sabaton and the amazingly diverse Mastodon from the good old US of A.

.
1.-3.7.2016
Nineteenth annual Tuska was everything but ”same old”. Plenty of improvements and programwise ”out of box” thinking was represented by the mighty Ghost, whose success has grown into huge proportions. Their show on Tuska saturday accompanied by a divine thunderstorm combined with sold out capacity, will be one for the historybooks. A day to remember indeed.
Entirely new fourth stage was introduced which focused on Artist interviews, i.e. Scott Ian, Alex Skolnick. A cherry on the top was super-exclusive Swallow The Sun acoustic show for hundred or so lucky spectators.
For festival area arrangements, Field Sauna, TuskaLibre area and Black Dining stood their ground as crowd favorites and will be pleasing the festival-goers again next year.
Tuska 2016 Artists:
Ghost, Avantasia, Children Of Bodom, Testament, Anthrax, Behemoth, Katatonia, Stam1na, Kvelertak, Hatebreed, Turmion Kätilöt, Gojira, With The Dead, Lordi, Swallow The Sun, Cain’s Offering, Diablo, Primordial, Thunderstone, Tsjuder, Cattle Decapitation, Obscura, Havok, Nervosa, Myrkur, Delain, Mantar, Beast In Black, Jess And The Ancient Ones, Brymir, Circle, Omnium Gatherum, Man With A Mission, Lord Vicar, Bendover, Crimson Sun, Mörbid Vomit, Whorion, Mørket, Block Buster, Fuck-Ushima, Blaakyum, Frosttide, Nuclear Omnicide, Embreach.

26.-28.6.2015
No more underaged, Tuska celebrated the big 18 at Suvilahti, Helsinki. This year, we had a new captain manning the wheel: Eeka ”Metal” Mäkynen who had been running Nosturi Club for a decade, jumped in on the challenge of turning the ship around. Onwards to victory, as they say.
Plenty of improvements were made on the festival area. While the big picture remained the same as far number of stages and their respective locations are concerned, the details were attended with due diligence. The festival goers were treated with a tent sauna, drink bar, upgraded VIP lounge and a fine dining establishment which served black food only, not to mention numerous food vendors providing everything between heaven and hell. The word from the street was that the general atmosphere of the festival was comparable to that of the ”good old days”.
Stage action was once again top notch. The brightest star of them all, Mr.Horror Rock himself, Alice Cooper, showed everyone what a proper rock show is all about. Other long-awaited highlight of the festival was Lamb Of God, who drove the crowd into a near manic frenzy on Tuska Friday night.
Another historical event was witnessed when Strong Scene Collective bands took the stage on Tuska Sunday afternoon. This is the collective of musicians who caused an uproar earlier in the year when they created actual bands of the made up bandnames on pieces of clothing of by a huge international clothes brand. Besides actual bands, Tuska 2015 provided stand up comedy and porno mime.
Tuska 2015 Artists:
ALICE COOPER, SABATON, IN FLAMES, LAMB OF GOD, OPETH, ABBATH, EXODUS, AMORPHIS, STRATOVARIUS, MOKOMA, ARCHITECTS, LOUDNESS, BLOODBATH, BLUES PILLS, GHOST BRIGADE, NE OBLIVISCARIS, EINHERJER, WARMEN, THE SIRENS, SOTAJUMALA, KROKODIL, BOMBUS, ATOMIROTTA, ALFAHANNE, DR. Over 25 000 metalheads made their way to Tuska 2015. The number is significant, because this is the first time in five years, when the quantity of attendees has increased from previous year. Whether this is the beginning of new metal boom, it’s hard to say but one thing is for certain: we accomplished what we set out to do and things are looking up.
There is already a lot going on for 2016. We can hardly wait.
27.-29.6.2014
Seventeenth annual Tuska Open Air Metal Festival gathered 24 000 metal maniacs to Suvilahti, Helsinki. This early summer had been particulary cold and rainy in Finland, therefore it was to everyone’s surprise and delight, when the skies open up and the sun came out for entire Friday and Saturday. On the other hand, Tuska experienced its first rainy day on Sunday. The gloomy weather went hand in hand with the dark ambience of the day’s program, spearheaded by Emperor and Satyricon.

2014 was another success. Maybe not to the extent of the ”crazy years” of metal we experienced in the last decade but we’re in a good place right now. It’s an honor and priviledge to organize a festival for such loyal and appreciative people. Tuska crowd, you are the best. Round 18 coming up next summer.
28.-30.6.2013
Sixteenth annual Tuska was celebrated in the Suvilahti venue for the third time. The venue had undergone some structural changes, the stages were shuffled around a bit, services improved and schedule tightened. The program once again offered a wide array of the best music in the world.

Looking forward to 2014 already.
