insomnium

Finland’s leading name in melodic death metal, Insomnium out of Joensuu, has released nine albums over its lengthy career, spanning more than 25 years. The most recent release is the theme album “Anno 1696” based on a short story written by the band’s founding member and vocalist/bassist Niilo Sevänen, taking place in the famine years experienced in Finland.

Musically, Insomnium combines traditional Scandi-melodeath elements with Finnish melancholy, the English death/doom tradition and progressive song structures. Over the years, the tempo has slowed down and the songs have taken on increasingly epic forms.

Internationally, Insomnium is one of Finland’s best-known metal acts, after all, the band’s albums have been released on widely known metal labels; first with Candlelight Records and later with Century Media.
